What You Should Know About Operation Amotekun

Operation Amotekun is a new development in the southwestern region of Nigeria, due to the increase of insecurity the region is currently facing. The state governors of this geo-political zone have joined forces to initiate a security outfit named “Amotekun”.

Fun Fact: ‘Amotekun’ is a yoruba word for Leopard.

The Importance of Amotekun

The essence of this new initiative is to help curb the issue of armed robbery, kidnapping, banditry, farmers and herders clashes in the region. During the inauguration of the security outfit on the 9th of January 2020, the governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde stated that the outfit is complementary to the efforts of the Nigerian police and other security agencies. 

Where Will The Amotekun Personnel Operate?

Amotekun will operate in areas that the Nigerian police are not usually effective.

The headquarters of Amotekun will be in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo state. Each of the 6 states involved have donated 20 patrol vehicles making a total of 120 vehicles and 100 motorcycles which makes a total of 600 motorcycles, for the commencement of operation.

Who Makes Up The Amotekun Personnel?

Members of this security initiative will include men of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), vigilante groups, local hunters and the Oodua people’s congress.

The security outfit will be funded effectively by the state governments involved, to ensure that the members are fully equipped with all what they need to operate fully.

Thousands of people will be employed by the state government and they will be well trained by security experts.

Amotekun has gotten support from popular Nigerian playwright, poet and essayist Wole Soyinka and Honourable Moshood Salvador, a chieftain of All Progressives Congress, while the Attorney General of the federation did not support the idea, as he calls it illegal.

The Nigerian police force and the military were not also in support of this initiative as they were absent from the launch stating that they were not informed of about their responsibilities regarding the new initiative.
